The Fight Against Hunger

Every day in our community large numbers of people face the prospect of going hungry. For many, getting by with little or nothing to eat is a way of life that eventually leads to malnourishment and sickness.
Hunger is not just a problem for the homeless. It touches individuals and families whose low incomes demand that they make the decision between buying food or paying their rent and utility bills.
To help in the fight against hunger, Haven of Rest Ministries prepares and serves thousands of free meals each year. In 2007 that number totaled 284,085.
Homeless people who come to Haven of Rest seeking overnight shelter are served dinner and breakfast. Those enrolled in the men and women’s resident rehabilitation programs receive three meals a day. In addition, both lunch and dinner are available seven days a week to any hungry person.
Much of the food used by Haven of Rest is donated, making it possible to prepare hot, nourishing meals for large numbers of people at an average cost of $1.92 per meal.
